According to The National Women’s Health Information Center’s definition of anorexia, anorexia (a-neh-RECK-see ah) nervosa, typically called anorexia, is a type of eating disorder that mainly affects girls and young women. A person with this disorder has an intense fear of gaining weight and limits the food she eats. The characters could be:

    • Body weight is maintained at least 15 per cent below that expected for a person's height.

    • It is self-induced weight loss caused by avoiding fattening foods and may involve taking excessive exercise, using laxatives or diuretics or self-induced vomiting.

    • There is a strong, almost overwhelming fear of putting on weight, with sufferers preoccupied with the shape or size of their bodies.

    • Rules are invented regarding how much food is allowed and how much exercise is needed after eating certain amounts of food.

    • Those suffering from anorexia pursue a very low 'ideal' weight.

    • The weight loss may cause hormonal disturbances and women with anorexia nervosa may stop having periods.

Anorexia is more than just a problem with food. It's a way of using food or starving oneself to feel more in control of her life and to ease tension, anger, and anxiety. While there is no single known cause of anorexia, several things may contribute to the development of the disorder according to The National Women’s Health Information Center’s definition of anorexia:

    · Biology. Several biological factors, including genetics and other related hormones, may contribute in the onset the disorder.

    · Culture. Some cultures in the U.S. have an ideal of extreme thinness. Women may define themselves on how beautiful they are.

    · Personal feelings. Someone with anorexia may feel badly about herself, feel helpless, and hate the way she looks. She has unrealistic expectations of herself and strives for perfection. She feels worthless, despite achievements and perceives a social pressure to be thin.

    · Stressful events or life changes. Things like starting a new school or job or being teased to traumatic events like rape can lead to the onset of anorexia.

Families. People with a mother or sister with anorexia are more likely to develop the disorder. Parents who think appearance is very important, diet themselves, and criticize their children's bodies are more likely to have a child with anorexia.

There are many medical risks associated with anorexia. They include: shrunken bones, mineral loss, low body temperature, irregular heartbeat, permanent failure of normal growth, development of osteoporosis and bulimia nervosa. Look at the picture below to find out how anorexia affects your health.

Luckily, most of the complications experienced by persons with anorexia nervosa are reversible when they restore weight. People with this disorder should be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible because eating disorders are most successfully treated when diagnosed early. Some patients can be treated as outpatients, but some may need hospitalization to stabilize their dangerously low weight. Weight gain of one to three pounds per week is considered safe and desirable. The most effective strategies for treating a patient have been weight restoration within ten percent of normal, and individual, family, and group therapies.

Anorexia nervosa is a potentially life-threatening illness, and should be treated as soon as possible. Sufferers should seek help, or be encouraged to do so. If you need help, you can call the ANAD hotline, 847-831-3438 (Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm, Central Time). They offer hotline counseling, a national network of free support groups, referrals to health care professionals, and education and prevention programs to promote self-acceptance and healthy lifestyles. All of their services are free of charge.

Bowen(嫌热不肯戴面具和假发的伪欧洲中世纪贵族), Susu(没衣服穿只好假扮学生), Jonny(革命同志小庄)。
