    deep dark

    good night

    "Everything will be FINE."

I'll go ahead and repeat it to myself.

Farewell to this sad moment. Tomorrow is another beautiful day.

    Good night.

    Route Voyron

(Yan Dang Road. quote from city8.com)

SF State Theatre Arts Department presents

Award-winning director Mark Jackson highlights theatricality of seduction in innovative premiere adaptation of Don Juan
SAN FRANCISCO, January 16, 2008 -- Noted Bay Area director and SF State alum Mark Jackson -- named 2007 Best Theatrical Auteur by SF Weekly -- brings "Don Juan" to the stage in what he describes as "a psychopathic, cruel, yet very funny production." This world-premiere adaptation of the unscrupulous, libertine and ruthless seducer draws on both the Moliere and Pushkin renditions of the legend. The result is a perspective of Don Juan fitted to today's society, where seduction and hypocrisy collaborate to get under our skins, sell us their ideologies and take from us what they like.

"Don Juan" will take place at SF State's Little Theatre from March 6 to 16. Admission is $12 to $20.

The legend centers on Don Juan as he seduces -- often with violence and pleasure -- young women of noble families, fighting their champions, killing their fathers and eventually paying the consequences. Approaching this classic tale in the mode of the grotesque -- marrying comedy and tragedy -- Jackson is "highlighting the theatricality of seduction." Jackson accomplishes this by using a "traveling troupe" approach, where performers will play multiple roles, switch costumes on stage, and manipulate their own lights, sets and props. Guest artist Jake Rodriguez -- winner of the 2003 Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Award in sound design -- serves as both performer and sound designer.

Audiences can expect to not only laugh and be moved by this innovative performance, but to think differently and further about the relationship between hypocrisy and seduction. Jackson's adaptation exposes the notion that "show and image are more important than message in our day" and highlights how "we seduce, are seduced, and want to be seduced in every aspect of our lives, especially now. We're even seduced by the nightly news."

Jackson (B.A., '94), co-founder of Art Street Theatre in San Francisco, is fresh off a successful run at the Deutsches Theatre in Berlin, Germany, where he directed the dance theatre piece "Yes Yes to Moscow."

Jackson's work is celebrated throughout the Bay Area and beyond, by audiences and critics alike. "Even in a region with many excellent directors, Jackson's smart, intensely physical work stands out," Lisa Drostova wrote in a 2006 article in San Francisco Magazine. "His plays are notable for their electricity and the elegant intelligence of his writing and staging; Jackson draws out the best in his collaborators and then forges their contributions into a coherent and affecting whole."

While in high demand, he enjoys teaching and directing at SF State because he admires the students' scrappiness and hunger -- traits which not only remind him of himself when he was an SF State student but which also are key to success in the professional realm. Jackson enjoys difficult material, and wants to give students an opportunity to do something meaty, noting that SF State students "have the energy for it." Jackson also notes "SF State's black-box theatre, the Brown Bag, in particular engenders a kind of do-it-yourself ethic, as well as an ensemble ethic. Maybe this is why so many small theatre companies have been formed by SF State graduates," Jackson says.

La Vie
